Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
