Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Content That Triggered the Dispute

The video footage, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in armed forces or security roles.

"As we did, you all made an pledge to protect and defend this founding document," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can reject illegal orders, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute orders that violate the law or our constitution."

Trump's Incensed Response

The recorded statement seemed to provoke a furious reply from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate publication, he stated: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Representatives React

Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader published a combined announcement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no place in America," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and call on GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the security of these representatives and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme digital publications and withdraw his violent language before he leads to violence," the statement continued.

Officials' Defiant Reaction

The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a response.

"We are former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and made an vow to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important obligation."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it punishable by death for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They added: "Every American must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

Further Governmental Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the execution of public representatives."

He added: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."

The GOP leader justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the government instructing military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in American history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and decide all that."

White House Statement

During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative declared. "We see sitting members of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to members of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the executive's proper directives."

She added: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically promoting."
