Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
