In the wake of a pivotal victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has substantially reduced the margin in the championship standings. Now sitting just 12 points behind leader McLaren's Lando Norris and ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri, the scene is set for a nail-biting three-way season finale at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman's Qatar win was far from straightforward. Although he delivered a superb drive for Red Bull, the victory was largely determined by a questionable strategic move from the Woking-based team. Choosing to keep their cars out during an initial safety car period, the team effectively gifted the race lead to Verstappen, who pounced perfectly.
"I'm excited, I'm ready to go there and fight for it," Verstappen commented. "I approach it with just good vibes. I will give everything I can but at the same time, if I don't win it, I still know that I had a fantastic season."
This philosophy according to him takes a lot of the pressure. The aim for the final round is straightforward: to extract every single element from himself and the car.
What makes this late-season charge truly astonishing is the distance he has fought back. Following the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, he was a staggering 104 points behind the then-leader his rival and had openly dismissed his title chances.
The turnaround began with significant car developments introduced by Red Bull at the Italian Grand Prix. Changes to the car's floor and aerodynamic package rectified ongoing handling problems, allowing the driver to regain confidence with the chassis once more.
Since that point, his performance has been completely dominant, securing a quintet of triumphs and several top-three finishes. He made sure to highlight the collective effort behind this comeback.
"We have achieved victories where maybe we shouldn't have, by executing the correct decision as a team," Verstappen added. "The partnership with my engineer, GP and the every member... we are deeply connected."
Ahead of the arrive in Abu Dhabi, the championship picture is crystal clear.
The intensity now shifts on the papaya-colored cars, who have let a big points cushion slip away due to recent setbacks, including a twin DSQ in Las Vegas. From his perspective, this position brings a sense of freedom, transforming the last event into a pure shot at the title with nothing to lose.
