The remains of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been located inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.
The victims, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been missing for a number of months, were detected on the end of last week. The cooling units were placed behind a plasterboard wall in the dwelling, located in the Innsbruck area.
A pair of males, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in the month of June. The older man, a work associate of the Syrian woman, stated to law enforcement last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but disputed murder.
Addressing journalists earlier, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office announced the brothers were being detained on "serious suspicion of murder".
The names of those concerned have been withheld by law enforcement, in accordance with local legislation.
Their going missing was initially flagged by the woman's cousin, who is based in Germany, on July 25, 2024.
Police said the 55-year-old suspect told them at the time she had taken an prolonged visit with her child to see her family in the nation of Turkey.
The mother's debit card was then found to have been used abroad several times.
However when police examined the victim's residence, her mobile phone was found.
A witness also stated listening to a disturbing sound in the flat, and cries of "mum" on the occasion the pair were presumed to have gone missing.
A broader police investigation was launched, with investigators discovering several texts transmitted via the woman's phone—among them a resignation letter to her company and communications to the male colleague.
Officials said a four-figure sum was also sent to the man.
Katja Tersch told reporters on that day that a storage facility had been leased before the victims' disappearance and a freezer had been placed there.
The two suspects removed the freezer from the storage space on the day the victims vanished, the official stated. And a week later, they acquired an additional appliance.
Authorities believe they consider this suggests the fatalities were premeditated.
"How they died was not identifiable due to the advanced decay of the remains," the official commented.
The prosecutor's spokesman—from the legal authorities—stated the exact sequence of events is yet to be determined, but the victims were carefully placed and not discovered during a earlier inspection.
Although the men were detained in the summer, it was not until the 12th of November that the 55-year-old confessed to an occurrence and to hiding the bodies. He denies any intent to kill, officials said.
At the same time, his brother confessed to a cover-up but denied knowledge of a homicide.
The brothers are presently in detention before court proceedings in prisons in Innsbruck and Salzburg, situated at a distance.
Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative stated the "alleged double murder... symbolizes the sudden and brutal end of a mother and child and exposes a heartless setup".
"Females of all ages are being killed due to the sole reason that they are of the female gender," they went on to say.
"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and issue affecting all of society that we must address decisively."
