The most severe possible consequences of the climate crisis for the UK have been mapped by scientists, encompassing a scorching 4C jump in average temperatures to a 2-metre increase in ocean levels. An alternative projection foresees a plunge of 6C in temperature following the failure of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy needs.

Credible Extremes, Not Guarantees

These effects, a number of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are viewed as low probability but possible. The team said that these projections addressed a shortfall in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for worst-case results.

"The severe weather events we have detailed should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," said the professor who oversaw the study. "The nation has been making preparations in the absence of the methods to assess catastrophic outcomes. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to plan for future conditions they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Harsh Climate Possibilities

A further series of dire projections maps the possible scale of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that thermometer readings could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be three times standard measurements.

The likelihood of the catastrophic events coming to pass could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what steps will be taken to tackle climate change and how the climate system will behave. This analysis was likened to defence planning or resilience checks for financial systems.

Critical Scenario Elements

  • Severe Heating: Global temperatures rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action fails or if strong feedback loops like the Amazon rainforest dying release its huge repository of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heatwaves and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is weakening and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A collapse commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Crop production would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be completely altered," noted the lead researcher.
  • Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic disintegrate quickly, flooding seaside communities. Differing from the other scenarios, this possibility is already understood by planners.
  • Pollution Paradox: Global averages could also be driven up by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This unexpected result occurs because aerosol particles from burning coal block sunlight from reaching the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Unthinkable

The severe models could be applied to guide the building of major projects, such as new towns, nuclear power stations and urban drainage systems. Knowledge about these environmental threats could also hasten the drive to reduce carbon pollution.

The study formulated the extreme models using a combination of observed and historical experience, climate models and climate physics. The possibilities exclude broader worldwide issues like the devastation of food supplies and resource wars.

The project was requested as part of a government’s risk assessment framework. Earlier reports have stated that not enough attention was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

Official experts has stated that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and examine the threats for four degrees. Past policy documents have been criticised as being "insufficient" by some observers.

A national response noted: "The climate emergency is at the heart of the country's focus, both adapting for the future and establishing itself as a clean energy superpower. It is vital that the UK is ready for the impacts."
