Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The governance of the team stays unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630m (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
