Young Australian Charged for Allegedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Sculpture

A teenager from Australia has faced legal proceedings after allegedly defacing a sizable blue sculpture of a mythical creature by applying googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, aged 19, participated via phone at the local court in South Australia on Tuesday, facing with one count of damaging property.

In a statement at the moment of the September incident, the local council explained that surveillance video showed a individual putting fake eyes on the sculpture, which locals have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.

The accused did not enter a plea and told the court she was unwell, according to news outlets, with the magistrate advising her to find a legal representative before her next court date in December.

The following day the reported event, the city leader said that restoration to the much-loved community sculpture would be costly as the stickers were impossible to be removed without damaging the art piece.

“This intentional vandalism to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those people of our society who have embraced Cast in Blue.”

She added the local government would pursue the “significant” repair costs from those accountable for the vandalism.

When the sculpture was first proposed, it received varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and design.

Priced at A$136,000 ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the creators influenced by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial discovered in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
